Hydrotherapy
Used by health professionals worldwide, including physiotherapists and exercise physiologists, Hydrotherapy is your natural solution to soothe discomfort and enhance your overall wellbeing.
What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is a form of therapeutic exercise conducted in a heated pool under the supervision of a qualified physiotherapist or an exercise physiologist with specialised training in aquatic therapy. This practice is designed to be inclusive, catering to individuals of all ages and varying levels of fitness.

Do I have to book to do a hydrotherapy session?

Yes! We must conduct an assessment to see if hydrotherapy is appropriate for you and what you want to achieve, as well as to check how it will impact any current rehabilitation program you may have in place. Once you have had your assessment, then you can book a session of hydrotherapy. We have both group and private sessions available depending on your needs.

Where are Sports Lab’s sessions held?

Our hydrotherapy sessions are held in Edgecliff at the KICK Learn to Swim pool, just a short distance from our Sports Lab Double Bay practice. To find out more about Hydrotherapy at KICK visit https://www.kickswim.com.au/hydrotherapy.html

Benefits of Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy, an integral part of physiotherapy, harnesses the properties of water to aid in the healing and wellness of the body. Here are the specific health benefits that hydrotherapy can offer:

1. Muscle Relaxation and Rehabilitation

  • Muscle Relaxation:  Immersion in warm water facilitates muscle relaxation and an increase in body temperature.
  • Enhanced Circulation: The warmth of the water leads to an expansion of blood vessels, improving blood flow and circulation.
  • Tissue Healing: Enhanced circulation contributes to the healing of injured tissues and aids in the rehabilitation of damaged muscles or joints.

2. Immune System Enhancement

  • Improved White Blood Cell Circulation: Hydrotherapy promotes the increased movement of white blood cells, which are crucial for the immune system.
  • Efficient Lymphatic System: The technique aids the lymphatic system in removing unwanted materials from the body more effectively, essentially detoxifying the system.
  • Exercise Benefits: When combined with the immune-boosting benefits of exercise, hydrotherapy can better prepare the body to combat common illnesses, such as colds and viruses.

3. Stress and Pain Reduction

  • Historical Use: Hydrotherapy has a long history of use for its calming effects.
  • Endorphin Release: Research indicates that hydrotherapy stimulates the release of endorphins, which are the body's natural stress and anxiety reducers.
  • Natural Pain Relief: The endorphins released during hydrotherapy also serve as a natural pain relief, helping to alleviate muscle soreness.

4. Facilitated Exercise for Enhanced Mobility

  • Reduced Risk of Falls: The aquatic environment reduces the likelihood of falls, making it safer for those with balance issues.
  • Tension Relief: The sensation of weightlessness in water helps to relieve tension in the limbs.
  • Muscle and Joint Support: Hydrotherapy supports sore muscles and enhances joint mobility.
  • Freedom of Movemen t: Patients experience greater freedom of movement in water compared to exercising on land.

Incorporating hydrotherapy into a physiotherapy regimen can significantly contribute to a patient's recovery and overall well-being, offering a safe and effective means to improve physical condition.
