Exercise Physiology
Exercise Physiology analyses how physical activity affects the body, aiding health, recovery, and performance.
What is Exercise physiology?
Exercise physiology has become a basic science for those who are professionally involved in the world of sport. A good training plan is key, but also following a nutritional plan adapted to the needs of the sport being practised, planning rest and recovery days and many other variables. The athlete, therefore, needs to have a team of professionals (doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists) to optimise their performance and get the best possible results.

Exercise Physiologists are university-trained, allied health professionals who specialise in the delivery of exercise, lifestyle and behavioural modification programs for the prevention and management of chronic diseases and injuries. They evaluate and advise people in the areas of cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, stability and body composition. They may further specialise in working with persons with diseases such as obesity, arthritis, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Sports Lab Exercise Physiology looks at the person from a global perspective. Athletic participation, sedentary occupations and even hobbies can create a number of imbalances, which may interfere with your general wellbeing over time. Indeed most injuries occur over time and are rarely due to a single cause.

Some potential causes of injury include:

  • Lack of flexibility
  • Strength deficits
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle imbalances
  • Inadequate warm-up
  • Altered biomechanics

Assessment is an important step in being free of injury. Our Sports Lab Exercise Physiologists thoroughly examine and screen you for several ‘hidden’ dysfunctions. Through a series of tests, they typically look for joint restrictions, nerve scar tissue and muscles that might have tender knots (trigger points). All are capable of causing pain, and often appear once your exercise program has begun. This will cause a sudden, frustrating halt to your exercise regime and fitness goals. A comprehensive assessment can help uncover these hidden

pain generators. Our programs typically target individual deficits in mobility and stability with injury-free performance the end goal.

  • Does stretching prevent injuries?
  • Is a 20 minute daily workout enough?
  • Can I train effectively without exercise equipment?
  • Will sit ups cover my core stability training?
  • Weight training puts your lower back at risk?
  • Walking on treadmill adequately burns body fat?
  • What is interval training?
  • Weight training makes you lean?

Exercise Physiologists are becoming increasingly important in the delivery of health care. They are often integrated into other health care provider programs and are recognised by Medicare Australia, the Department of Veterans Affairs

and numerous private health insurers.
