What is Podiatry?

Under the Podiatrists Registration Act 1995 podiatry is defined as “the diagnosis and treatment by medical, surgical, electrical, mechanical or manual methods of ailments or disorders of the foot or foot related structures and appropriate preventative treatment and education

The conditions Sports Lab Podiatrists treat include those resulting from bone and joint disorders such as arthritis and soft-tissue and muscular pathologies, as well as neurological and circulatory disease. Sports Lab Podiatrists are also able to diagnose and treat any complications of the above, which affect the lower limb, including skin and nail disorders, corns, calluses and ingrown toenails. Foot injuries and infections gained through sport or other activities are also diagnosed and treated by Sports Lab Podiatrists.

All the new aged Sports Lab Podiatrists are university trained, highly skilled professionals with Australasian Podiatry Council Accreditation and Members of Sports Medicine Australia. Our Podiatrists specialise with the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of medical and Sporting conditions of the feet and lower limbs, including the ankles, legs, knees, hips and lower backs.

Although university educated, the Sport Lab Podiatrists are continually upgrading their skills and knowledge through further training and education nationally and internationally as part of the accreditation criteria and better results for their patients.

Our feet should be thought of as the foundation for our bodies and as such, influence the function of many structures above them. Most obviously, the feet influence the function of the ankles, knees and hips, but also influence all aspects of the kinetic chain including the spine, shoulders.

The feet are very complex structures as they are made up of many bones and an intricate array of ligaments, tendons and muscles. A detailed understanding of the interaction between each of these structures is needed in order to make an accurate diagnosis of foot pathology.

Sports Lab utilises podiatry as part of the integrated therapies along side physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists and Nutritionists for a more accurate diagnosis, treatment prevention of conditions such as:

  • Running or walking difficulties
  • Computer generated orthotic therapy
  • Prefabricated orthotic insoles (off the shelf) with modifications to customize to you needs
  • Digital foot cast scanning
  • Painful flat feet
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Arthritic pain & deformity
  • Clawed toes or bunion formation
  • Callus, corns or plantar warts
  • Footwear review & advice
  • Shin splints and lower leg pain
  • General foot care and chiropody treatment
  • Thickened nails

Sports Lab and its Podiatrists have extensive affiliation with leading orthopaedic surgeons to ensure good understanding of surgical techniques and expected outcomes for more complex conditions.

Sports Lab and its Podiatrists assess the gait using static and dynamic foot biomechanics assessment for diagnosis and before discussing management options.

Both the Inner West (Drummoyne) and Eastern Suburbs (Double Bay) Sports Labs have a long run ways for visual running and walking gait analysis and our podiatrists are not limited for room and therefore do not have to compromise their assessments with treadmill analysis. Research has revealed that the treadmill can be inaccurate or unreliable and is not a true representation of your daily walking or running.

As with all assessments, Sports Lab Podiatry is vital for those people who have specific foot or leg injuries, as well as those with long term pain that have not resolved. People who rely on good foot function for their living and recreation will benefit from our thorough foot assessment and management.

Podiatry at Sports Lab works in conjunction with Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Massage Therapy and Dietetics to promote rapid recovery and minimise injury recurrence.
